After scoring just two points in the first half, Mississippi State center Teaira McCowan dominated after halftime to lead the Bulldogs to the Elite Eight for the third consecutive year with a 76-53 win over Arizona State. McCowan finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, passing Sylvia Fowles to become the all-time leader in career NCAA tournament rebounding.

Refereeing took center stage in the third quarter of the first semifinal of the Portland regional, as Mississippi State took 18 free throws in the period. At one point, as the Bulldogs had shot 20 free throws in the game to Arizona State's two, Sun Devils coach Charli Turner Thorne gave referee Felicia Grinter an earful during a timeout. Both teams went regularly to the free throw line thereafter as Arizona State rallied within nine points after three, 54-45.

Mississippi State's leading scorer Teaira McCowan, who's scored double-figures 32 times in 34 games this season, has as many fouls as points at the break (two apiece). But the Bulldogs still lead upset-minded Arizona State 32-24 at halftime of the first semifinal in the Portland regional, with all four other starters scoring at least five points.

Arizona State did a nice job of denying Mississippi State star center Teaira McCowan the ball in the first quarter, and McCowan did not score until the 1:42 mark. But that didn't slow down the Bulldogs' balanced attack. They got seven points from Jordan Danberry to lead 17-10 after one in the first semifinal of the Portland regional.
