Bruce Arians said left tackle Donovan Smith will be a "game-time decision," but his status for Sunday is officially "doubtful."

As expected, Bruce Arians said Jameis Winston will play against the Lions. "He threw fine [today]," Arians said. "He'll be ready to go." Left tackle Donovan Smith will be a game-time decision. Beau Allen will miss the game after suffering an ankle injury Thursday.

Jameis Winston's thumb has improved enough that he is throwing a football today. We didn't see any deep balls in the 30-min window of practice open to the media, but on short to intermediate throws, the ball was leaving his hand nicely.

Some good news on the Jameis Winston injury front: He's not throwing a football yet but he has progressed to throwing a tennis ball. Yesterday, he was only doing simulated throws in drills. Today he is gripping and throwing a tennis ball. Tomorrow should be a football, unless they wait to do that Saturday before they head to Detroit.

Sherman, Jenkins join Payton Award nominees

Veteran defensive backs and team leaders Richard Sherman of the 49ers and Malcolm Jenkins of the Eagles are among the 32 nominees for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

Wide receiver Mike Evans has been named the Bucs' nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. "Being nominated for Walter Payton Man of the Year is overwhelming – it's a big deal," Evans said in a statement. "I never thought I could be a nominee. To be in the same conversation as other players who do tremendous things in their community, I'm truly honored."

Bucs coach Bruce Arians said there are no plans at this point to put Mike Evans on injured reserve. "It's a pretty good hamstring strain. He healed fast enough in the spring, so we'll just see how it goes each and every day."

Jameis Winston is practicing today but he's not throwing, nor is he holding a ball for any of the quarterback drills. For two weeks last year, he played through a sprained AC joint with minimal practice during the week before the injury ultimately sidelined him for three games.

Bucs plan on Winston (thumb) starting vs. Lions

Bucs QB Jameis Winston is expected to have a limited workload this week due to an injured thumb, but coach Bruce Arians said "the plan" is for Winston to start vs. the Lions on Sunday.

Jenna Laine ESPN Staff Writer

Jameis Winston was asked what it's like being caught in the crosshairs of pundits who all have strong opinions about him. Is it difficult to tune out? "I've got an opponent to focus on and it's bigger than me," Winston said. "It's about this team."

The Bucs have signed wide receiver Ishmael Hyman to the active roster from the practice squad and placed running back T.J. Logan on injured reserve. Logan broke his thumb last week catching punts.

Source: Bucs don't expect Evans to return in '19

Mike Evans, who is third in the NFL with 1,157 receiving yards, isn't expected to return this season after suffering a pulled hamstring in the Bucs' win over the Colts on Sunday.

Jenna Laine ESPN Staff Writer

After Jameis Winston's visit with a hand specialist this afternoon, the team is "optimistic" about him continuing to play this season, I'm told. ‬The issue was determining if he could risk further injury by continuing to play.

Jenna Laine ESPN Staff Writer

Regarding Jameis Winston seeing a hand specialist: He suffered a small fracture in his thumb Sunday. He's dealing with swelling and soreness today. It's also impacted his ability to grip the football, which is why he came out of Sunday's game initially. The hand specialist will help determine long-term prognosis, Bruce Arians said.

Jenna Laine ESPN Staff Writer

Bruce Arians said there is no tear in Mike Evans' hamstring. It's a pull. He said, "We're gonna let it bleed out. He was a quick healer when he had it in the spring. He'll be very doubtful for this week." Arians also said Jameis Winston will have a second opinion with a hand specialist on his thumb injury this afternoon.
