The addition of linebacker Mark Barron gives the Pittsburgh Steelers a versatile option in the middle of the field. Barron signs a two-year, $12-million deal with Pittsburgh, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The 230-pound Barron, 29, transitioned from safety to linebacker with the Los Angeles Rams, so he should be able to handle transitional inside linebacker duties along with the dime backer role on passing downs. Barron was cut by the Rams so won't count against the compensatory pick formula, and his presence likely makes Morgan Burnett, who's requested a release, expendable.

In an interview with ESPN, Le'Veon Bell elaborated on turning down the Steelers' five-year, $70-million deal last offseason because of the team's low guarantee structure ($17 million, Bell says).

The Steelers gave out matching two-year deals for receiver Eli Rogers and Dan McCullers, who are depth signings but have big-play potential. Rogers can beat man coverage in the slot, and McCullers can move an offensive linemen. Just don't expect them to do it all of the time. Both are expected to command reserve roles heading into the offseason.

Ben Roethlisberger's $5 million roster bonus kicks in Friday. No new deal imminent as of late morning but fluid situation. Team can pay out bonus over course of regular season. Steelers want to pick Roethlisberger, 37, into a long-term deal well into late 30s.

Jesse James on whether or not anything surprised him about the Antonio Brown trade: "Nothing really. It had to happen. It was time for him to move on from Pittsburgh and time for Pittsburgh to move on from him. I think things blew out of control pretty fast there, didn't expect it to go the way that it did as fast as it did. But I think the Steelers and him were at peace with wanting to move on and really happy that it's over."

Wide receiver Donte Moncrief -- who's joining Steelers on a two-year deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter-- won't adequately replace Antonio Brown (not many can) but gets a chance to re-establish himself after struggles in Jacksonville. Moncrief has size, speed and a touchdown in three of his last five career games against Pittsburgh. The Steelers sought outside receiver help to complement JuJu Smith-Schuster, which makes Moncrief a good value signing. Rarely do the Steelers give out huge money on two-year deals.
