Coach: Giants' Shepard will be OK for Week 1

Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard should be ready to play Week 1, and fellow wide receiver Golden Tate is in concussion protocol, coach Pat Shurmur said Sunday.

No yellow jersey for Sterling Shepard (fractured thumb) on Sunday. It's the next step in his healing process. Just about a lock to be ready for Week 1 vs Cowboys. "We believe so, yeah," coach Pat Shurmur told reporters. "Absolutely."

Giants QB Jones faced with fumbles, 'adversity'

By the time Daniel Jones' night ended in the Giants' 32-13 preseason victory over the Bears, he had gone 11-of-14 passing for 161 yards with a touchdown pass -- and two fumbles.

Jones recognizes ups and downs in 2nd preseason game (1:32)

Pat Shurmur leaves no doubt about his Week 1 starter being Eli Manning. "John [Mara] owns the team. We're on the same page. ... You heard it from the owner."

Manning and Jones throw TDs to lead Giants over Bears

Eli Manning and heir apparent Daniel Jones threw first-half touchdown passes against Chicago backups and the New York Giants had an easy night in posting a 32-13 preseason victory over the Bears on Friday night.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Giants quarterbacks led by Daniel Jones have played extremely well in first two preseason games. A combined 50-of-67 for 646 yards with six touchdown passes and one interception. All four QBs (Jones, Eli Manning, Kyle Lauletta, Alex Tanney) have throw a TD pass.

Daniel Jones finishes 11-of-14 passing for 161 yards with a TD pass and two fumbles in his second outing. Some ups and downs in his first game experience facing pressure. Ball security needs work, but leaves on a high note after a perfect TD toss to T.J. Jones.

TE Evan Engram and RB Saquon Barkley not expected to play as coaches decisions. These are the injury scratches: RB Wayne Gallman CB Sam Beal CB DeAndre Baker LB Alec Ogletree OT Brian Mihalik OT George Asafo-Adjei WR Darius Slayton WR Sterling Shepard

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

There will be no Saquon Barkley tonight vs Bears, per source. He said earlier this week he always wants to play football. But coach Pat Shurmur knows his value and might not risk it at all this preseason.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

The dilemma Pat Shurmur has to face is does he want to put Daniel Jones in with the second-team offensive line which potentially has third-string tackles (Brian Mihalik still sidelined). That's why in the opener Jones only played one series. Could mean he enters rather early again vs Bears. Giants have to protect their investment.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Something Daniel Jones mentioned to me after last week's perfect performance was he wasn't touched on his five dropbacks. The next hit he takes will be his first in the NFL. This is the next step in his progression. See how he performs with pressure in his face. No better opponent tonight than the Bears.

Tate: Doctor says he gave others banned meds

Giants receiver Golden Tate is keeping open the option of taking action against the doctor who prescribed clomiphene, a banned substance, that led to his four-game suspension.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Golden Tate says the substance he used was clomiphene. It was prescribed to him by his doctor who told him it was fine and he had given it to other NFL players. Tate self-reported after he took a drug test. Accepts the punishment. He's ultimately responsible what he puts in his body.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Saquon Barkley always wants to play football but given his importance there may be temptation for Giants to keep him out of preseason. "You make a good point," Pat Shurmur said. "He's a valuable player and we'll just have to see as time goes if he's going to play in these games."

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Pat Shurmur says he does believe Golden Tate. Reiterates he's been open and honest about what happened to cause the suspension. The Giants will move forward almost like they lost a player to injury, think they can fill the void despite inserting players with dissimilar resumes. "It is just that simple," Shurmur said.
