Remember Tony Sanchez, Donavan Tate and Matt Hobgood? Few do -- but all were selected ahead of Mike Trout. Here's a look at the first-rounders who never really panned out.

It took him 26 pitches, but Kenley Jansen got the save. The Dodgers have won 5 of 6 against the Padres this season, but every game has been decided by 3 runs or less. They improved to 29-16.

Dave Roberts was greeted by boos as he approached the mound to relieve Kenta Maeda, who struck out 12 batters and did not give up a run through 6 2/3 innings. He threw only 85 pitches, but it's a two-run lead, and Roberts wanted to match up with Scott Alexander. 2019 baseball.

Olney: Padres must save Chris Paddack for October

The Rookie of the Year candidate is on an innings limit. But San Diego has a shot at the playoffs -- and the Padres can't let their ace not be ready for them.

Chris Paddack: "It'll be fun to watch my next start. That's all I gotta say."

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Padres catcher Austin Hedges is unconcerned about how Chris Paddack will recover from his first bad start in the major leagues. "He'll be fine. He'll go out and shove like he always does."

Manny Machado had himself a night. He hit one to Pasadena off Clayton Kershaw and doubled off Kenley Jansen, giving him his second three-hit game in a Padres uniform. But the Dodgers prevailed, 6-3. They are 28-16, 5 games ahead of San Diego.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Clayton Kershaw allowed plenty of hard contact, but as usual, he found a way. He's through seven, his team leading 6-3, and has outlasted the up-and-coming Chris Paddack.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Chris Paddack — facing a potent, lefty-leaning lineup that feasts off changeups — had the first hiccup of his rookie season. He allowed 7 ER on 18 H through his first 7 starts, then gave up 6 R (3 ER) on 5 hits in 4 2/3 IP against the Dodgers. His ERA is still 1.99.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Manny Machado pulverized a fastball from Clayton Kershaw, hitting a 2-run homer that carried 441 feet and traveled 112 mph. Kershaw had give up 7 home runs this season — 3 have gone to Machado and Yasiel Puig.
