When an MLB pitcher gets hit in the head by a liner, as Braves lefty Sean Newcomb did Sat., it raises the issue of safety devices. This season, 10 big league pitchers (including 3 who'd previously suffered serious head injuries — Evan Marshall, Daniel Ponce de Leon & Matt Shoemaker) have worn the SST Pro Performance head guard, SST CEO Matt Meier told ESPN's Outside the Lines. That carbon fiber cap insert isn't approved by MLB & the players' union, but pitchers are free to wear it or any safety product — unless it interferes with competition or licensing agreements. In 2016, MLB & the union came up with a visor-like hybrid cap-helmet, but no pitchers have worn it in a game.
